Turkish American Cultural Alliance (TACA) presents 19th International Children's Day with the attendance of children representing 9 different countries. Children and parents from various ethnic backgrounds from Chicagoland gather for this joyful celebration for all children. Children parade dressed in their traditional costumes and perform for the audience. The parade of nations in 2020 will include Albania, America, Bulgaria, Colombia, India, Korea, Lithuania, Russia and Turkey.

In Turkey, Children's Day originated from the first gathering of Grand National Assembly on April 23, 1920. Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, gifted April 23rd to the children of the country, so that they would cherish their independence. This year marks the 97th celebration of this day.

On April 23rd children from around the world come to Turkey. Turkish families who have children of a similar age host them. Festivities last over a week. The visiting and Turkish children spend a lot of time together. Many children, often not even speaking the same language, create lifelong friendships. Several of the events are broadcasted on television, showing the children in their traditional outfits, dancing singing and exchanging gifts. The United Nations acknowledges and participates in the events.

TACA has been bringing this celebration to Chicago in the same spirit, to share the International Children's Day with children of all backgrounds so that they all learn to appreciate different cultures and get to experience a joyous event with others, showcase their talents, and make new friends. Children parade dressed in their traditional costumes and performs their traditional dance shows for the audience. Each country represented has the opportunity to display national flags and share information.
